The era began in 1961, the year that the company launched many of their classic superhero titles created by Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. Most of the MCU's fictional characters operate in a single reality, with most locations mirroring real-life places; many major characters are based in New York City. The brand truly kicked off with the introduction of The Fantastic Four, further securing their place in the comic book world.

DC Comics, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, is one of the largest and oldest American comic book companies, and produces material featuring numerous culturally iconic heroic characters since 1967. Most of their material takes place in the fictional DC Universe.The initials "DC" came from the company's popular series Detective Comics, which featured Batman's debut and subsequently became part of the company's name.

Two godly brothers, Stan Lee and Malcolm-Wheeler Nicholson, who personify the DC and Marvel Universes became aware of the other's existence, and challenged one another to a series of duels involving each universe's respective superheroes. The losing universe would cease to exist.

There were eleven battles fought between the two universes.
